Advanced Electrical Service Specialist I

Position: Electrical Power Generation Technician (EPG Specialist)

Primary Function

Perform advanced troubleshooting and repairs on mechanical and electrical systems related to electrical power generation, including UPS systems, ATS units, and switchgear.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluate assigned jobs logically, efficiently, and within specified timeframes.

  • Apply mathematical formulas during troubleshooting processes.

  • Maintain a consistent productivity rate of 85% or higher.

  • Accurately document service activities through daily service reports and time entries.

  • Work with systems such as Modbus, Ethernet, CAN Bus; proficient in uploading/downloading system files and parameters.

  • Participate in emergency on-call rotation with other switchgear/UPS specialists for 7-day periods, remaining reachable unless on approved leave.

  • Understand and troubleshoot Caterpillar UPS systems and be willing to undergo further OEM training.

  • Communicate effectively with internal teams, customers, and end users — both verbally and in writing. Able to provide training on equipment operation.

  • Interpret and modify schematic diagrams and manuals to reflect as-built conditions.

  • Follow all company and safety protocols, especially when working around high-voltage circuits.

  • Identify and understand system components including processors, power supplies, I/O modules, and communication modules.

  • Modify or fabricate components as needed for specific jobs.

  • Attend relevant training, complete monthly Pure Safety sessions, and notify supervisors of additional training needs.


Education & Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.

  • Substitutions:

    • 4 years of relevant military experience or

    • A technical college degree in diesel/electrical technology may substitute up to 2 years of required experience.


Work Experience

  • External Candidates: Minimum of 5 years of direct experience with Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS). UPS and switchgear experience highly preferred.

  • Internal Candidates: Must have performed as a GPEC EPG Master Technician for at least 1 year.


Technical Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate in-depth knowledge and troubleshooting skills in the following areas:

  • Engines & Systems:

    • Lubrication, cooling, fuel systems (mechanical & electronic)

    • Diesel, gasoline, and LP gas engines

    • Load banks, voltage regulation, surge suppression

    • Governors (mechanical/electronic), actuators, battery charging systems

  • Electrical Knowledge:

    • Generator operations (PM and self-excited)

    • Generator & engine instrumentation

    • PLC-based industrial controls

    • KVAR and power factor control systems

    • UPS systems, stored energy systems, and power conditioning equipment

  • Communication Protocols & Tools:

    • Industrial protocols (Modbus, Ethernet)

    • Remote monitoring systems

    • Use of test equipment: oscilloscopes, DVMs, phase meters, harmonic meters

  • Documentation & Safety:

    • Read/interpret schematics and flow diagrams

    • Follow lockout/tagout procedures

    • Comfortable working on live high-voltage circuits

    • Adhere strictly to safety standards and policies


Physical & Logistical Requirements

  • Must regularly lift and position parts up to 137 lbs manually or using hoists.

  • Possess a complete set of mechanical/electrical hand tools.

  • Must have cognitive reasoning skills to diagnose unfamiliar technical issues.

  • Able to write detailed and clear repair reports.

  • Comfortable working independently in the field with limited supervision.

  • Must hold or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

  • Clean driving record required (CDL may be required for some vehicles).

  • Must operate service vehicles daily and travel to customer sites for extended periods.

  • This is a remote field-based position with rare visits to the dispatch office.
